E. Hervegh Biography

E. Hervegh

E. Hervegh was an artist who contributed designs to Eugene Grasset's 'La plante et ses applications ornementales' from 1896. Several artists contributed to this publication, including Georges Bourgeot (1876-1955), Marcelle Gaudin (1877-1935), Anna Martin (1872-1959), Juliette Milesi (1872-1959) and Maurice Verneuil (1869-1942). Contributors also included E. Hervegh, Marc Mangin and Aline Poudevin, for whom we have no dates, although as these were presumably students of Grasset, they may have similar birth dates to the known artists listed above.

It is important not to confuse this French Art Nouveau illustrator with another prominent historical figure who shared the same name: Emma Herwegh (1817-1904). The other Emma Herwegh was a highly prominent German revolutionary, writer, and salonnière who was married to the radical poet Georg Herwegh. She famously participated in the German uprisings of 1848. While she lived her final years in Paris, she was a political activist rather than the French decorative artist who worked in Eugène Grasset's studio in the late 1890s.

Online sources may have conflated the details of these two women and used the name 'Emma' for the designer E. Hervegh, when we can see no evidence that this was their first name, or indeed that E. Hervegh was a woman.
