His work combined the classical landscape tradition with close observation of nature, and later influenced the Impressionists.

Born in Paris to a prosperous family involved in the clothing trade, Corot initially worked in commerce. In 1822 his family supported his decision to study painting. He trained first with Achille-Etna Michallon and, after Michallon's death, with Jean-Victor Bertin.

Corot spent 1825 to 1828 in Italy, painting outdoor studies of Rome and the surrounding countryside. He returned to Italy in 1834 and 1843 and travelled widely in France, making drawings and oil sketches outdoors before developing more finished compositions in his studio.

Over time, Corot's landscapes became softer in colour and more concerned with atmosphere and memory. He is often associated with the Barbizon School, though he maintained a strong connection to classical landscape painting. His treatment of light and the natural world helped prepare the way for later nineteenth-century artists.

Read our full Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot biography.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Jean-Baptiste_Camille_Corot_41_High_Resolution_Images_b44f20ae-d691-4ec9-ae02-ec778a022056.jpg?v=1793121435
https://www.publicdomainimagelibrary.com/products/jean-baptiste-camille-corot-41-high-resolution-images
