His early works, which included murals and ceiling paintings, were rooted in traditional art styles.

However, it was Klimt's later work that truly set him apart. He became known for his distinctive and opulent style, characterised by intricate patterns, bold use of gold leaf and a sensuous approach to the human figure. One of his most iconic works, 'The Kiss' (1907-1908), exemplifies these qualities, blending elements of symbolism and Art Nouveau. The painting's gold background and intricate detail highlight Klimt's fascination with Byzantine mosaics and his desire to transcend traditional artistic boundaries.

Klimt's work often focused on themes of love, sexuality and the female form, which was both celebrated and criticised in his time. His 'Golden Phase', which included works such as 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' (1907) is renowned for its lavish use of gold and elaborate ornamentation.

These paintings reflect Klimt's interest in exploring psychological depth and emotional complexity, often portraying his subjects with a mix of realism and abstraction.

In 1897, Klimt co-founded the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who sought to break away from the conservative constraints of the Austrian art establishment.
