Born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England, Sully emigrated with his family to the United States in 1792, settling first in South Carolina. He began his artistic training under the guidance of his brother-in-law, Jean Belzons, and later honed his skills with the miniaturist Gilbert Stuart, whose influence can be seen in Sully’s refined brushwork and sensitive treatment of his sitters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSully’s career flourished in Philadelphia, which became his home and the centre of his professional life. He established himself as one of the leading portraitists of his era, producing more than 2,600 works over his lifetime. His subjects included many notable figures of American society, such as Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, and General Lafayette. Sully’s most famous portrait, however, is perhaps that of Queen Victoria, commissioned during his visit to England in 1837.
