Richmond, George

George Richmond (1809-1896) was a distinguished English portrait painter whose career spanned much of the nineteenth century. Born in Brompton, London, on 28 March 1809, Richmond was the son of Thomas Richmond, himself a miniaturist, and thus was introduced early to the world of art. His formative years were marked by his studies at the Royal Academy Schools, a prestigious institution that nurtured some of the finest artists of the Victorian era. There he formed lifelong friendships with Samuel Palmer and Edward Calvert, and became a prominent member of the group known as the Ancients—disciples of William Blake, whose spiritual and artistic influence was profound on Richmond’s early work.

In his youth, Richmond was deeply inspired by Blake’s mystical vision and idealistic approach to art, often producing work that echoed Blakean themes. However, after Blake’s death in 1827 and the passing of Richmond’s first wife, Julia, in 1837, his style gradually shifted towards a more conventional and lucrative practice as a portraitist. He found considerable success in this field, earning commissions from members of the aristocracy, clergy, and leading intellectuals of the day. Richmond’s portraits were renowned for their sensitivity, psychological insight, and technical proficiency. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he eschewed flattery in favour of capturing the true character of his sitters, resulting in works that were both honest and deeply humane.

Among his most celebrated sitters were eminent Victorians such as William Ewart Gladstone, John Ruskin, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens. Richmond’s ability to put his subjects at ease allowed him to depict them with an intimacy rare in nineteenth-century portraiture. His portraits, whether of adults or children, stood out for their naturalism and warmth. He worked in both oils and watercolours, and his drawings were equally admired for their delicacy and expressiveness.

Outside his career as an artist, Richmond was also known for his philanthropic activities and his deep Christian faith, which informed both his art and his personal life. He was actively involved in the Royal Academy, serving as an Associate from 1857 and a full Academician from 1866. Richmond’s influence extended to his family: his son, Sir William Blake Richmond, became an accomplished artist in his own right.

George Richmond died on 19 March 1896, leaving behind a substantial body of work that continues to be appreciated for its artistic merit and its compassionate portrayal of Victorian society.

Artwork by the British artist George Richmond.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 4328 pixels wide by 5752 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about George Richmond.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Richmond_George_1809-1896_-CharlesDarwin1840_main.jpg?v=1789471290
