His views of lakes, wooded shores and the New England coast are admired for their quiet atmosphere, clear light and carefully balanced compositions. His mature paintings are closely associated with American Luminism.

Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, on 22 March 1816, Kensett learnt engraving from his father, Thomas Kensett. He subsequently worked as an engraver in New Haven, New York and Albany. This demanding craft helped develop his precise drawing and sensitivity to variations of tone, but he increasingly wanted to become a painter.

In 1840 Kensett travelled to Europe with fellow artists John William Casilear, Asher B. Durand and Thomas P. Rossiter. Over the next seven years he studied and sketched in England, France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. He admired the Old Masters and English landscape painting, particularly John Constable, while developing his own approach to landscape subjects.

Returning to America in 1847, Kensett settled in New York and began exhibiting views of the Hudson River, the Catskills, the Adirondacks, Niagara Falls and New England. He became a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1849 and established a successful career among American collectors.

Where some Hudson River School artists favoured dramatic mountain scenery and theatrical skies, Kensett increasingly preferred calm stretches of water, modest headlands and finely graduated light. His paintings of Lake George and Long Island Sound demonstrate a remarkable ability to simplify a landscape without sacrificing its natural character. The apparent stillness of these works often comes from a careful balance of shoreline, horizon and open sky.

In 1867 Kensett acquired land on an island off Darien, Connecticut, where he built a summer studio. The surrounding coastal scenery inspired many of his finest late paintings. He also played an important role in New York’s cultural institutions, supporting the Artists’ Fund Society and helping to establish the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1870.

Kensett died in New York on 14 December 1872, following illness after an attempt to rescue a drowning woman. His late coastal paintings, with their subtle colour and luminous atmosphere, remain distinctive achievements of nineteenth-century American landscape art.

Picture by the American Hudson River School artist John Frederick Kensett.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 5136 pixels wide by 3366 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about John Frederick Kensett.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Kensett_JohnFrederick_1816-1872_-TheWhiteMountains_MountWashington1851_main.jpg?v=1793572794
kensett-john-frederick-1816-1872-view-on-the-hudson-1865
Kensett, John Frederick (1816-1872) - View on the Hudson 1865

Picture by the American Hudson River School artist John Frederick Kensett.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 5140 pixels wide by 3165 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about John Frederick Kensett.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Kensett_JohnFrederick_1816-1872_-ViewontheHudson1865_main.jpg?v=1793573364
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/collections/Kensett_John_Frederick_1816-1872.jpg?v=1793572221
