Holland, James

James Holland (1799–1870) was an English painter and watercolourist celebrated for richly coloured views of European cities, architectural landmarks, landscapes and flowers. His paintings of Venice are particularly admired for their lively handling of light and colour. Working in both oils and watercolours, he became a familiar presence at London exhibitions during the nineteenth century.

Holland was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, on 17 October 1799, into a family connected with the pottery industry. At the age of twelve, he entered an apprenticeship at John Davenport’s pottery works in Longport, where he painted flowers and birds on porcelain. The experience sharpened his eye for decorative detail and helped establish the confident use of colour evident in his later pictures.

In 1819 he moved to London, initially supporting himself through pottery painting and by teaching drawing. His early artistic subjects included flowers, birds and landscape studies. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1824, and over the following years began to expand his interests towards architectural views and scenes of everyday life.

A visit to Paris in 1831 exposed him to French painting and the work of Richard Parkes Bonington, whose fresh colour and atmospheric watercolours proved influential. Holland subsequently travelled widely through continental Europe, visiting France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Portugal. He frequently worked from sketches made during these journeys, developing them into finished paintings back in his studio.

Venice became one of his favourite subjects. Its canals, bridges, churches and sunlit façades offered opportunities to combine his interest in architecture with reflections on water and shifting effects of light. Holland also painted views of British towns and landscapes, including subjects in Wales and around Greenwich. His paintings are distinctive for their clear colour, animated details and sense of place.

His reputation was strengthened by drawings produced for illustrated travel books and annuals, which brought his Continental views to a wider audience. In 1835 he became an associate of the Society of Painters in Water Colours. He later exhibited with the Society of British Artists before returning to the watercolour society, where he was elected a full member in 1858.

Holland remained productive throughout his career, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and other leading London institutions. Although often associated with watercolour painting, he also worked confidently in oils, adapting his approach to the subjects and effects he wished to capture.

He died in London on 12 February 1870. His work offers a vivid record of nineteenth-century travel and urban scenery, combining careful architectural observation with the brightness and immediacy of watercolour.

Painting by British artist James Holland.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 4374 pixels wide by 5787 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about James Holland.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Holland_James_1799-1870_-PiazzadeiSignori_Verona1844_main.jpg?v=1793658135
holland-james-1799-1870-venice-piazza-di-san-marco-1850
Holland, James (1799-1870) - Venice, Piazza di San Marco 1850

Painting by British artist James Holland.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 5008 pixels wide by 4136 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about James Holland.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Holland_James_1799-1870_-Venice_PiazzadiSanMarco1850_main.jpg?v=1793658529
