He is particularly admired for his atmospheric treatment of sunlight, mist and distant scenery. His pictures often place a glowing sky above dark foreground trees or hills, creating a quiet, contemplative mood rather than a dramatic spectacle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBorn in Greenfield, New York, on 10 July 1823, Gifford grew up in the Hudson River valley. He attended Brown University but left in 1844 to pursue art. In New York he studied drawing and anatomy with John Rubens Smith. Although he initially considered portrait painting, the landscapes of Thomas Cole encouraged him to concentrate on nature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSketching journeys into the Catskill, Berkshire and Shawangunk mountains during the late 1840s helped Gifford establish his preferred subjects. He exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design and was elected a full academician in 1854. His careful observation of landscape was accompanied by an increasingly personal interest in the effects of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom 1855 to 1857 Gifford travelled in Europe, studying art and painting landscapes in Britain, France, Switzerland and Italy. He returned to Europe and the Mediterranean region during later journeys, visiting places including Venice, the Italian lakes and the Middle East. These travels supplied subjects for many paintings completed in his New York studio.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring the American Civil War he served for periods with New York’s Seventh Regiment. In 1870 he travelled west with fellow landscape painters John Frederick Kensett and Worthington Whittredge, later joining Ferdinand V. Hayden’s geological survey in the Rocky Mountain region. He also visited the Pacific Northwest in 1874.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGifford generally preferred to paint the remembered atmosphere of a place rather than reproduce every detail. His warm haze, softened distances and restrained palette link his work to the style now called American Luminism. Landscapes such as \u003cem\u003eA Gorge in the Mountains\u003c\/em\u003e show how sunlight could unite hills, water and sky in a single harmonious scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe died in New York on 29 August 1880. A memorial exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art followed in 1881, reflecting his standing among contemporary American painters.
