This formative period exposed him to the techniques and styles of the capital’s artistic scene, but it was his return to Norfolk and subsequent involvement with the Norwich Society of Artists that cemented his legacy.

The Norwich School, founded in 1803, was characterised by a keen observation of the local landscape and a commitment to depicting the unique qualities of the Norfolk and Suffolk countryside. Clover became a member in 1805, quickly establishing himself as one of its leading portraitists. While most of his colleagues, such as John Crome and John Sell Cotman, specialised in landscapes, Clover’s reputation rested primarily on his portraits, although he occasionally painted rural scenes.

Clover’s portraiture is marked by a refined sense of character and a subtle use of colour, reflecting the influence of both his mentor Opie and the broader Norwich School ethos. His sitters ranged from local notables to fellow artists, and his ability to capture likenesses with sensitivity made him much sought-after in East Anglia.

Notably, he painted several portraits of John Crome, offering a valuable visual record of the school’s founder. In addition to oil painting, Clover produced drawings and etchings, further demonstrating his versatility.

Despite his local focus, Clover maintained connections with London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. However, his heart remained in Norfolk, where he contributed to the artistic life of Norwich for over four decades. He also played a role in the Society’s administration, helping to organise exhibitions and support fellow members.

Clover’s works, while less celebrated than those of Crome or Cotman, are significant for their insight into early nineteenth-century provincial life and society. Today, many of his paintings can be found in the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, as well as in private collections.

Scene by British artist of the Norwich School of Painters, Joseph Clover.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 4428 pixels wide by 6120 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read our full Joseph Clover.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Clover_Joseph_1779-1853_-InChipchasePark1810_main.jpg?v=1793362285
