He is best known for coastal views in which rocky shores, breaking waves and expansive skies are depicted with remarkable clarity and sensitivity to natural light.

Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in 1837, Bricher grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He worked as a clerk in Boston while teaching himself to paint and studying the work of established landscape artists. In 1858, while sketching on Mount Desert Island in Maine, he met the painters Charles Temple Dix and William Stanley Haseltine, whose encouragement helped him pursue painting professionally.

Bricher initially produced views of inland lakes, rivers and woodlands, reflecting the picturesque interests of the Hudson River School. During the 1860s he also supplied designs for chromolithographs published by Louis Prang & Company. These colour prints introduced his pictures to an audience beyond those able to purchase original paintings.

In 1868 he moved his studio to New York. Over the following decades he became increasingly interested in marine subjects, travelling regularly along the coastlines of Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. He also visited Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy, whose dramatic cliffs and surrounding sea remained important subjects for many years.

Bricher usually made drawings and watercolour studies during his summer journeys before developing finished paintings in the studio. His mature pictures often feature clear shallow water, sunlit rocks, distant sails and gently shifting clouds. Although he could depict rough seas and heavy surf, he frequently preferred the calm weather and luminous skies associated with American Luminism.

His work appeared at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and other American exhibition venues. He became a member of the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in 1874 and an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1879.

Bricher continued painting into the twentieth century and died on Staten Island, New York, in 1908. His paintings preserve the changing character of the New England coast and exemplify a particularly clear, measured approach to nineteenth-century American marine painting.

Picture by the American Hudson River School artist Alfred Bricher.

This download consists of 1 image in JPEG format that is 600dpi and 5145 pixels wide by 3829 pixels tall.

The picture is out of copyright and in the public domain, so you are free to use it in whatever way you'd like, including commercial use.

Read more about Alfred Bricher.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/files/Bricher_AlfredThompson_1837-1908_-TimeandTide_main.jpg?v=1793612723
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/7965/7290/collections/Bricher_Alfred_Thompson_1837-1908.jpg?v=1793611370
